Medical Lead – Specialty Medicines

Location – UK, GSK HQ

This role will be offered as a 12-month fixed term contract.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead, coach, manage & develop the Specialty Medical team, to help deliver the GSK mission and to ensure achievement of company objectives, including:
  • Setting ambitious objectives and priorities and conducting appraisals to drive performance.
  • Creation of a working environment conducive to successful implementation and team development.
  • Through line reports and broader therapy aligned team members (e.g. Marketing, Regulatory, Quality) generate and implement high quality medical strategic and tactical plans and activities that address patient, clinician, and business needs.
  • Plan ahead and manage resource and capacity of team based on understanding what needs to be done and when in collaboration with the Specialty Medical Head.
  • Uphold the highest compliance standards & provide authoritative opinion on medical and ethical matters to support colleagues across GSK, enabling the evidence-based use of GSK medicines and compliance with the relevant statutory requirements (e.g. ABPI Code of Practice, Medicines Act, and EU Directives).
  • Accountable for review & examination and/or certification of materials under their team’s scope and responsible for review & examination and/or certification of certain materials.
  • Overseeing & writing of GSK’s response to complaints from bodies such as the PMCPA or MHRA – this will typically involve engaging with members of the extended brand team e.g. brand manager, regulatory affairs manager.
  • Ensure oversight of free of charge supply requests.
  • Leading the therapy team on ownership & delivery of the medical aspects of the therapy area business plans, including key evidence generation plans, patient advocacy and engagement, working closely with colleagues across GlaxoSmithKline UK (e.g. Marketing, Sales, Health Outcomes) and the relevant above country teams for both launch & pipeline assets.
  • Co-ordinating and utilising specialist knowledge with therapy aligned colleagues in formulating and implementing short- and long-term medical strategy for optimal benefit to the patient, prescriber, and GSK.
  • Leading medical plan incorporating omni-channel strategy.
  • Responsible for delivery of UK Medical Value proposition, through utilisation & implementation of the Medical Planning & Medical Impact frameworks.
  • Lead the team to support creation & delivery of the Medical Digital & Technology plan for Omnichannel.
  • Deliver high quality & tailored external engagement across the healthcare system & through strategic medical partnerships to develop insight and understanding of the value of our medicines now and in the future.
  • Influencing evidence generation strategies in support of UK market needs & support research activities including:
    • Knowledge of UK clinical practice, care pathways, key competitors & input where required into study allocation process and implementation of studies in the UK
    • Input into development of local protocols, patient information leaflets (including sign-off of risk/benefit statement) and named patient programmes
    • Proactive input into European Medical meetings to ensure UK strategy is supported
    • Establish relationships and build trust with investigators to answer medical questions, provide relevant training GCP & address issues arising from studies in the UK by supporting the clinical director and clinical study managers
    • To provide input into post study analysis where required
  • Identify opportunities for GSK involvement in activities that support patients and benefit the NHS.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

  • A GMC-registered doctor or a GPhC-registered pharmacist with significant experience as an ABPI final signatory
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and lead in matrix environments, turning insight into action while inspiring cross-functional teams
  • Broad experience within the pharmaceutical industry, with a deep understanding of medical affairs and scientific engagement
  • Extensive experience managing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including Key External Experts and global partners
  • A proven track record of working as a strategic partner across functions and with above-country internal stakeholders

Preferred skills and experience:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and motivate teams of medical and scientific professionals
  • Relevant expertise in specialty medicines, particularly in respiratory, is desirable. Candidates with a strong understanding of complex or rare disease areas will also be valued.
  • Relevant experience with above-country teams for both launch and pipeline assets
  • Experience with digital tools and platforms, including designing and executing medical digital and technology plans to enhance patient and healthcare engagement
  • Experience driving innovation in medical affairs through new approaches to patient advocacy, healthcare partnerships, and evidence-based decision-making
